5 GSA Clubs to Join
by Diedre Ribbens
As graduate students, we are fortunate to have the resources of the Graduate Student Association (GSA) on hand. Part of the GSA’s funding goes to student groups and clubs, which any grad student can join! This month, Restriction Digests highlights five clubs. Visit the Clubs Page of the Restriction Digest to find out more about all registered student groups, or how to apply to start your own!
Hopkins Leadership Initiative for the Environment (LIFE)
The mission of the Hopkins LIFE student group is to promote sustainability and recycling on the Hopkins Medical School campus and in Baltimore City. They also host informational events about commuting to work by bicycle, recycling used electronics, and current lab waste/recycling programs on campus. |
Hopkins Marathon Team (HMT).
The Hopkins Marathon team is composed of students from all three JHMI schools, as well as JHMI staff. Members ran the Baltimore Marathon (and half-marathon) this fall, and are currently training for the Rock’N’Roll USA Marathon/Half-Marathon. The club hosts social runs on Tuesday evenings and long runs on Saturday mornings. They also have plenty of team happy hours, brunches, and pasta dinners, including a recent Awards Night at Max’s Tap House in Fells Point. For more information, visit their website |
Hopkins Brew Club Do you like drinking craft-brewed beer? Do you enjoy microbiology? Cooking? Hopkins Brew Club combines aspects of all three of these activities! The group convenes several times per year to create their own home-brewed beer, and, of course, to enjoy the fruits of their labor. Recent brews have included a Belgian-style ale and their first all-grain beer. |
Hopkins Dance. Hopkins Dance is a student group dedicated to promoting partner-style and social dancing on campus. They provide a forum for initiating, organizing, and publicizing community dance events. Among the events hosted by Hopkins Dance hosted this year were Salsa lessons and Argentine Tango lessons. They will be hosting a Swing dance lesson series in late Spring/early Summer. Stay tuned, and check their website |
CentriFugues.
The CentriFugues are a co-ed a cappella group comprised of graduate students from the Schools of Medicine, Public Health, and Engineering. Formed nearly two years ago, the group has acquired about twenty members who perform a variety of popular rock, alternative, and pop songs, as well as original research-themed songs to add levity to the lives of fellow Hopkins graduate students. The group has performed at a variety of events including new student orientations, happy hours, the BME Variety Show, and the SPH Talent Show. The CentriFugues have also caroled at winter holiday parties in multiple departments around the medical campus, and their hard work has culminated in successful spring and winter concerts |
